In this modern world, where large-scale piracy is prevalent, safeguarding our privacy on the Internet is paramount. One way to protect our privacy is to use a VPN. VPN stands for virtual private network; It encrypts your computer's data packets and makes it impossible for a third person to monitor your web traffic.
While connecting to the VPN, many users report that the connection failed with error code 868 on their Windows devices. There are many reasons for this error. We have tried to cover them all in this article. Follow the methods below to resolve your network connection error.
Method 1 - Disable Windows Firewall and other security software
Security software like Windows Firewall blocks specific ports, preventing your VPN from connecting to the internet. Some routers and antivirus software also block ports for security reasons. You will need to disable all programs that can interfere with the VPN and block the ports required for the VPN. Follow these steps to disable Windows Firewall.
STEP 1: Open run Windows pressing Win + R, type firewall.cpland press Enter. The Windows Defender Firewall window will open.
STEP 2: In the firewall window, click Enable or disable Windows Defender Firewall.
STEP 3: Disable Windows Defender Firewall (not recommended) for both public and private networks. Click on ok to save the settings.
Turning off the firewall would be sufficient in most cases. However, if the error persists, you will need to check your router configuration if it supports all network ports.
Method 2 - Run netsh commands
Connection failure can sometimes occur due to bad network connections. We will try to reset the network connection settings by running a few commands at the command prompt.
STEP 1: Press the Windows key and search Symbol of the system, right click on it and select run as administrator.
STEP 2: In the command prompt window, type the following commands one by one:
- ipconfig / flushdns
- ipconfig/registerdns
- ipconfig/release
- ipconfig/renew
- restart of netsh winsock
- restart ip netsh int
Wait for all the commands to run, then close the Command Prompt window. Your problem would disappear if it occurred due to incorrect network connection settings. If not, try the following methods.
Method 3: update the network drivers
Drivers are the most important software to properly run hardware in the Windows operating system. Drivers need to be updated regularly to ensure that Windows works properly. Connection error 868 sometimes occurs due to faulty or old network drivers. Follow this procedure to update your network drivers.
STEP 1: Open run pressing Windows and R at the same time, type devmgmt.msc and press Enter.
STEP 2: locate and expand Net adapters, Right-click the network adapter and select update driver.
STEP 3: Select Automatically searches for updated driver software. The required driver software will be downloaded and installed automatically.
After successfully updating the software, restart your computer to apply the changes.
Method 4: restart RasMan
This is a solution for connection error 868 on a Windows computer. RasMan is a remote access service manager that sometimes causes network connection problems. Resetting RasMan settings solves this problem for most users.
STEP 1: Press the Windows button and search system symbol, right-click the search result and select run as an administrator.
STEP 2: Type the following two commands in the command prompt box:
- net stop Rasman
- net start RasMan
STEP 3: Close the Command Prompt window after running the commands and check if the error is resolved or not.
Method 5: remove the proxy settings
If you have made proxy settings on your computer, it could be the reason for your network connection error. VPN and proxy settings don't go hand in hand, so if you're setting up a VPN, you should disable or remove all proxy settings from your computer. Follow these steps to remove the proxy settings.
STEP 1: Open run pressing Windows + R, generate inetcpl.cpl and hit enter. The Internet Properties Wizard will open.
PHASE 2: go to Connections tab and click LAN settings button.
STEP 3: uncheck, Use an automatic configuration script, Y Use a proxy server for your LAN options.
STEP 4: Click ok to save the settings.
