Microsoft Security Client is Microsoft's free security client for scanning your system for malware and external attacks. The program is free and runs in the background, thus protecting your system all the time. However, it sometimes gives the following error:

Note: For systems using Windows Defender, you need to run the same troubleshooter for Windows Defender as the current security client would be. For instance. Kill the Windows Defense Process in Task Manager.

The following steps may be helpful in solving the problem:

Solution 1] End the Microsoft Security Client process (msseces.exe) in Task Manager

One of the reasons why the Microsoft Security Client program suddenly stopped working is that the process may have been corrupted. Restart your system and see if it helps. Failed to terminate Microsoft Security Client process in Task Manager.

1] Press CTRL + ALT + CANC and select Task Manager options.

2] In the process list, check the process. msseces.exe. Right click and select Process finished.

3] Restart the system now and see if the problem persists.

1] Press Win + R to open the Run window. Write the command cmd and press Enter to open the Command Prompt window.

Solution 2] Delete the EppOobe.etl file

1] Go to the following file in File Explorer:

C: ProgramData Microsoft Microsoft Security Client Support EppOobe.etl

Where C: is the system drive.

2] Delete the file EppOobe.etl archive.

Solution 3] Completely uninstall Microsoft Security Client

The reason I mentioned uninstalling the Microsoft Security Client “completely” is because simply uninstalling it from the Programs and Features menu wouldn't be enough.


Go to this link and download the tool mentioned in the “Fix it for me” section. Run the tool to remove all Microsoft Security Essentials components from your system.


Solution 4] Disable the Program Compatibility Troubleshooter service

1] Press Win + R to open the Run window. Write the command services.msc and press Enter to open the services window.

2] In the alphabetical list, find the file Assistance Service for program compatibility.

3] Right-click on Service then click Property.


4] Change the file Start type to Disabled in the drop-down menu and Status of the service to Stopped.

5] Apply status e start again the system.

Solution 5] Update Windows

As this is a known issue, Windows may release a fix very soon. The solution would be in the form of a Windows update. We may update Windows from time to time to make sure you don't miss the same thing.

Solution 6] Update your graphics card drivers

Although the problem affects the Microsoft Security Client, it is known to be caused by faulty graphics card drivers. We could update the same as mentioned here.
