Microsoft removed the Homegroup feature in one of its updates; However, previous versions of Windows 10 could cause this error unexpectedly. The error message that usually appears is Windows was unable to start the peer-to-peer pool service on the local computer along with error 1068.

Solution 1: delete the idstore.sst file
One of the first things you should try to get rid of error 1068 is to delete the idstore.sst file from your PC. The solution only takes a couple of steps.
Step 1: Open File Explorer on your PC.
Step 2: Go to the following path:
C:> Windows> ServiceProfiles> LocalService> AppData> Roaming> PeerNetworking
It is possible that the Application data it may be hiding in the Local Service Collector file. If so, go to View File Explorer tab, then select the file Hidden objects option.
3 pass: Once you are in the Peer Networking folder, find the idstore.sst file, delete it from your PC. You will see this file in a folder like idstoreand when you go through it, you will see the file type as Microsoft Serialized Certificate Store archive.
After deleting the file, restart your PC and check for the error.
Solution 2: Make sure the peer network services are running
You may get this error if the peer network services on your PC are not running. To be safe, please follow the steps below:
Step 1: Open the run by pressing the button Win + R keys. In the box, type services.msc and press the button Log in key.
Step 2: In the Services window, look for the following services:
Peer name resolution protocol
Peer Network Identity Manager
Grouping of peer networks
Publication of the PNRP machine name
Locate them, right-click and select the file Home option.
After making sure that the services have started successfully, the error 1068 problem will most likely be resolved.
Solution 3: Check the Peernet registry key
One of the keys in the Peernet registry responsible for deactivating it may be activated. To do this, you will need to access the Windows Registry Editor to make sure that the registry key value is set correctly.
Step 1: Open the Registry Editor. For this, press the button Win + R keys, then in the Run box that opens, type regedit and press the button Log in key.

One of the local Group Policy settings may be causing Peer Networking Error 1068 in Windows 10.

Step 2: When the Local Group Policy Editor window opens, go to the left pane and navigate to the following folder:
Computer Configuration> Administrative Templates> Network> Microsoft Peer-to-Peer Networking Services
3 pass: Now go to the right pane and make sure the status of Disable Microsoft Peer-to-Peer Networking Services the setting is set as Not configured. In case the status is set to something else, double-click Disable Microsoft Peer-to-Peer Networking option. Then in the new window that opens, set the status as Not configured.
After changing the Group Policy setting, restart your PC and check if the problem is resolved.
Solution 5: Delete the files from the MachineKeys folder
Some users reported that deleting files from MachineKeys folder helped them get rid of error 1068 in Windows 10.
Step 1: Open File Explorer in Windows and go to the following path:
C:> ProgramData> Microsoft> Crypto> RSA> MachineKeys
Step 2: Select all files available in the directory and delete them. If possible, put the files elsewhere on your PC as a backup.
Once the files are removed, restart your PC and see if the problem is resolved.
Solution 6: Run the Homegroup troubleshooter
Although Homegroup has been removed from the latest version of Windows 10, if you are using the older version of Windows 10, you can run the homegroup troubleshooter and fix the problem. Follow these steps:
Step 1: Press Win + WILL keyboard keys to launch the Start Search box. Here, write home group and select the file Domestic group search results option.

Solution 7: Change the security permission of the MachineKeys folder
Another solution that might help you solve this problem is to change the MachineKeys directory security permissions.
Step 1: Open File Explorer and go to the following path:
C:> ProgramData> Microsoft> Crypto> RSA
Step 2: Here, right-click on MachineKeys folder and select the file Property option.
3 pass: Then, when the Properties window opens, go to the file Safety tab and click change option below Group or user names section.
Phase 4: On the next screen, select the file All option below Group or user names section. After that, in Authorizations for all select the section to allow check mark in front Total control option.
After making your selection, click To apply then ok. Restart your PC and check if error 1068 is resolved.
Solution 8: Run the Get-NetConnectionProfile command in PowerShell
Here is a command you can run in Windows PowerShell to get rid of the peer networking error in Windows 10. Here's how:
Step 1: Press Win + X keyboard keys and select Windows PowerShell (administrator) option.
Step 2: Type the following command in the PowerShell window and press the key Log in key:
PowerShell Get-NetConnectionProfile
Once the command is done successfully, restart your PC and check for the error.
Solution 9: update Windows 10
This is a surefire way to fix peer network error 1068 in Windows 10. Go ahead and update Windows on your PC to the latest version.

Step 2: Double-click Peer Name Resolution Protocol Service. In the new window that opens, go to Log into language. Here in the Login as: select the section Local system account option. Apply the settings by clicking ok.
See if it works. If not, you can try the following method.
3 pass: A Log into tab, select This profile option. Then, in the username section, type: Local service and clear the password fields. Save the settings and exit to the Services screen.
Now stop and restart the Peer Service Name Resolution Protocol file and see if the problem is resolved.
Solution 11: Check if the following services are running
Here are some other Windows services you can check to see if they're running. If any of them are not running, start it.
Step 1: Open the Services next window Step 1 of solution 2.
Step 2: In the list of services, find the following services. When you find it, check its status. If the service is not running, click Home option.
- Application-level gateway service
- Network connections
- Networked Location Awareness (NLA)
- Plug in and use
- Automatic Remote Access Connection Manager
- Remote Access Connection Manager
- Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
- Telephony
Solution 12: disable / uninstall antivirus
Third party antivirus apps have also been reported to be the cause of error 1068. If you have an antivirus installed on your PC, you should try disabling it and see if that helped the case. If not, you should also try uninstalling the antivirus.
