Forgot your Gmail password? Here's how to reset it

If you've forgotten your Gmail password, don't worry, there is a way to reset it and log into your account. Here's how to do exactly that.

If you switch to a new device or update your app, you will likely need to log into your Gmail account again, which is impossible without the password. If you forget your Gmail password, don't worry. You can go back to your account!


Here's how to reset your Gmail password if you've forgotten it, and what you should do if you don't have a recovery email.



How to reset your Gmail password

  • Go to the Gmail login page and enter your Gmail email address, just as if you were to log in. Awards NEXT per I will proceed.
  • The next page will ask you to enter your password. Click on the blue Forgot password? button below instead.
  • Then, type in the last password you remember using with your Gmail account if you can. Take a guess. If you do, you don't need the remaining steps in this guide.
  • If you guess right, Google will redirect you to a recovery method or you can click Try another way below the input box.
  • Google will ask you to confirm the phone number linked to the email account you are trying to recover. Enter the numbers in the space provided and press Send . If you don't have access to the linked phone number, click I don't have a phone .
  • If your account is connected to the Gmail app on another device, you will have the option to get a verification code from the app.
  • If your Gmail account isn't connected on another device, click Try another way for alternative account recovery options.

Usually, by this point, you may have run out of account recovery options. However, if you have previously enabled two-factor authentication or have a reset email for your account, there are other solutions for you to try.




How to recover your Gmail account with a recovery email

If you have a recovery email address linked to the account you are trying to recover, Google will give you the option to receive a recovery code to that email. Here's how to get it:

  1. After clicking Forgot password? , you will be asked to verify the recovery email you added to the account you are trying to recover.
  2. Check that inbox for a six-digit verification code.
  3. Enter the code in the space provided and click on NEXT .
  4. You will be asked to create a new password and confirm it by typing it in the appropriate box.
  5. Click on NEXT when you are done and voila! You have successfully changed your password.

How to recover your Gmail account without a recovery email

If you don't have a recovery email associated with your account, there are a few other options for you to try. click on Try another way to perform some additional steps.

You may be prompted to answer a security question you set when you first created your account. If you answer correctly, you will regain access to your Gmail account.

If the Gmail account is connected to the mobile app, when you click Try another way you are asked to enter the last password you remember. You will then see a pop-up asking you to confirm that you are the account owner by tapping Yes on your linked mobile device.



Alternatively, Gmail may ask you to verify your identity by selecting the same two-digit number that appears on the screen in an email sent to the account whose password you want to recover. After that, you can go ahead and create a new password.

Additional steps to protect your Gmail account

After setting a new password, Google will ask you to check the security settings associated with your Gmail account and your Google account in general.


If you don't already have them, we highly recommend adding a phone number and current backup email to your account.

In addition to helping protect your Gmail account, they will make it easier for you to recover your account if you forget your password again. But you can take steps to prevent this from happening.
