Cortana is a new feature added to Windows 10 that has powerful functions like setting reminders, receiving input in any way like gesture, voice, etc. and help you search the content for valuable suggestions. It's actually a Windows 10 personal assistant. But it has its drawback, as it may not be supported in your region and consumes a lot of your network bandwidth because it always runs in the background. Also, you'll need to link your local account to your Microsoft account in order to work on it.
If you're not using Cortana and you think it's also taking up some of your network traffic for your measured connection, then it's best to turn it on to disable it entirely. We provide you here a short guide to do the same. Make sure you are logged in as a system administrator to do the same.
Method 1: completely disable Cortana via the registry in Windows 10
1 - Press Tasto Windows + R to open RUN.
2 - Now write regedit on it and hit enter.
3 - Now, once the registry editor window is open, find the following location from the left menu.
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
- SOFTWARE
- Policies
- Microsoft
- windows
- Windows Search
4 - If you don't find "Windows Search”(Folder) when you expand the Windows folder, then right-click the Windows folder and select New> Password. NominaloWindows Search".
5 - Right-click on "Windows Search”(Folder) you just created in the left pane and select New> DWORD Value (32-bit).
6 - Double-click on Name the value "Allow Cortana".
7 - Now, double click on it and set the value to "0".
8 - Close the registry editor and restart your PC to finally delete cortana on your PC.
Note: - To re-enable Cortana, simply go to that location in the Registry Editor and change the value to 1.
Method 2: disable Cortana feature in Windows 10
Step 1:
Hold down the Ctrl + Shift + Esc buttons on the keyboard that opens the Task Manager. Now, look at the More details option below it and click on it.
Step 2:
When you do, you will find a list of open options at the bottom of your device. Scroll down to find the Cortana option and right-click on it. Click on the open file destination option available in the list.
Step 3:
Cortana file path opens.Here, you need to do some homework. Rename the Microsoft.Windows folder. Cortana _ cw5nih2txyeewy in Microsoft.Windows.Cortana_cw5nih2txyeewy.old
Step 4:
When you perform the previous step, the warning message with Access Denied is displayed. Click the Continue icon.
Step 5:
Another message will appear indicating that the file is open in another folder. Just skip it for a while, go back to the task manager, right-click on Cortana and select the End Task option.
Step 6:
Now, go back to the warning message. The action could not be completed because the file or folder is open in another program and click the Retry button.
Step 7:
Select Cortana on the taskbar and click the Hidden option by right clicking on it, to provide additional space for other program icons.
