Has it ever happened that most of your programs become unresponsive and if you check Windows Task Manager it shows that Runtime Broker is consuming all CPU and disk usage. Many Windows 10 users have reported that Runtime Broker is using 100% of their CPU usage and are facing problems running other programs.
Before showing the solutions to this problem, let me explain to you why this happens and what the Runtime Broker service is in Windows.
What is Runtime Broker?
Runtime Broker is an official Microsoft process to determine the permissions used by other apps and allow them to access different permissions like microphone permission, camera permission only when we grant those permissions to the program. Runtime Broker was introduced in Windows 8 and continues in Windows 10.
In normal times, Runtime Broker doesn't use a lot of memory, it usually uses 20-30MB on average. However, when you launch a universal app (an app that uses a different permission), the runtime broker starts using more memory. If you are running more universal applications, this data will increase accordingly. Therefore, the memory usage of the Runtime Broker mainly depends on the number of universal applications running on the PC.
We tested these methods to resolve the agent high CPU usage issue at run time.
Method 1: disable the "Get tips, tricks and tips while using Windows" option
Disabling this option results in an immediate decrease in the CPU usage of the Runtime Broker. This is because this option tracks all your activities while using your computer, so you end up using a high CPU.
STEP 1 - Open Settings by pressing windows Y io at the same time.
STEP 2 - Click System settings.
STEP 3 - Select Notifications and actions. Scroll down and deselect Get tips, tricks and tips while using Windows option.
Disabling this option will likely solve your problem. If not, try the next method.
Method 2: disable background apps
The reason behind Runtime Broker's high CPU usage is possibly because you have a lot of funds running applications on your computer. Disabling this process will certainly reduce the agent's CPU usage at runtime.
STEP 1 - Open settings pressing windows Y io at the same time.
STEP 2 - Click The privacy settings.
STEP 3: Scroll down on the left panel and select App in background.
STEP 4: Uncheck all apps (you can leave the apps where you get live notifications like Skype).
This will undoubtedly reduce the Runtime Broker's overall CPU usage and disk usage. You can also use this method if your computer has less RAM and crashes frequently.
