
Shapes are ready-made diagrams used to illustrate a certain topic. Different kinds of shapes like circles, triangles, arrows etc. They are used in different Office suites such as Word documents, PowerPoint templates and Excel spreadsheets.
In this article, we will follow some steps to know how to insert and edit shapes in Microsoft Word 2016:
Step 1:
Type “word 2016” into the Windows search bar located next to the Start icon. Click on the first option provided.
Step 2:
Click the "Insert" tab located in the upper left corner of the "Word" window. After clicking, a ribbon toolbar will appear which provides numerous options such as paging options, tables, illustrations, symbols etc.
In the “illustrations” section, click on “Shapes”.
3 pass:
Click to select one of the desired shapes from the different categories of shapes such as lines, rectangles, basic shapes etc.
For example, we have selected a "triangle" in Shapes.
We will now click anywhere on the screen and drag the cursor over the word page to create a triangle.
4 pass:
If you want to change the size of the triangle, click and drag the "circle" icon provided on the sides and corners of the triangle. Dragging the icon towards the triangle will make it small and dragging it away will make it appear larger.
You can also rotate the triangle 360 ° using the "rotate" icon located at the top of the triangle. Click the icon and drag the cursor in the desired direction to rotate the triangle.
5 pass:
If you wish to have other shapes, repeat "Step 3".
For example, we have selected a “Flowchart: Process” shape.
Now, we will click anywhere on the screen and drag the cursor over the word page to create a flowchart of the process.
6 pass:
If you need different placement of text and images, you can try the “Layout Options”. The layout options consist of features such as placement, text arrangement, and shape size.
To use this option, click on the shape and then click on the “arc” icon located on the right side of the given shape.
Note: You can choose various layout options from the icons. If you would like to have a different layout than the default layouts, click the “View More” button.
Step 7:
The "see more" button opens the layout properties window. You can create a custom layout with different horizontal and vertical alignments.
After defining all alignments and other options, click "OK" to complete the process.
8 pass:
If you would like to have a different color for a specific shape, click on the shape and then click “Shape Fill” located on the ribbon toolbar. Click on the desired color and it will reflect on the selected shape.
9 pass:
If you want to have a different outline for a specific shape, click on the shape and then click “Shape Outline” located on the ribbon toolbar. Click on one of the colors and it will be reflected on the selected shape. You can also change the thickness of the outline from the weight section.
For example, we have selected a black colored outline with a weight of 4½ pt.
10 pass:
If you want to change some effects on a specific shape, click on the shape and then click on “Shape Effects” located on the ribbon toolbar. Effects such as 3-D, Shadow, Reflection etc. are available for use.
For example, we have selected a “reflection variation” as a virtual effect on the shape.
11 pass:
If you don't want to keep the current shape, in this case, click on the shape and then click "Edit Shape" in the ribbon toolbar.
In this section, click on “Edit Shape” and click on one of the desired shapes. For example, we have selected a “7 Pointed Star” shape in place of the current “Process: Flowchart” shape.
Now, the existing shape will be formed into a new shape as shown in the screenshot:
