How to set a different wallpaper for each virtual desktop on Windows 11

The official release of Windows 11 is getting closer and many users are installing the build of the Beta Channel released a few days ago, much more stable than the one dedicated to developers. Curious beta testers are starting to discover all the new features of Windows 11, such as a completely redesigned and much more minimal interface and several new features. One such feature, which was not present in Windows 10, is the ability to set a different wallpaper for each virtual desktop, very useful for understanding at a glance which desktop you are on at that moment: here's how.




Steps to set a different wallpaper for each virtual desktop on Windows 11

To get started you obviously need to have multiple virtual desktops and you need to switch to the one you want to customize. In Windows 11 just click on the "Task View" button on the taskbar: it is the icon that looks like two overlapping squares. After clicking you will see in the central part all the open windows, while in the lower part you will see the various existing desktops. Here you can also create new ones by pressing the "+" under "New desktop".

After that, to set a different wallpaper on each virtual desktop:

  • Fare click on the virtual desktop whose wallpaper you want to change, so the view will switch to that specific desk;
  • Right-click on an empty spot on the desktop itself and select "Customize", then choose “Wallpaper”. Alternatively you can go in Settings> Personalization> Wallpaper;
  • In "Background" choose the image you want to apply to the virtual desktop. You can choose one of the recent ones or browse the photos on your PC. (Windows 11 default wallpapers are located inside various folders in C: WindowsWebWallpaper)

After setting the virtual desktop background, close the Settings by pressing the "X" at the top right. You can then move to another virtual desktop and repeat the process to change the background of the latter as well.




If you want to change the background more quickly, you can move the mouse over the icon of the two squares, wait for the various virtual desktops to appear and then right-click on the one you want. Here you can select "Choose background" and then follow the last step of the procedure written above.
