Microsoft's free upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 is in progress. Microsoft is offering the free update both to new devices, which however come pre-installed with Windows 10, and to many users' desktop and laptop PCs.
In this guide we focus on how to upgrade existing PCs with Windows 10 installed to the new Windows 11. If you want to do a clean installation, we refer you to our guide on how to install windows 11. Important premise: Not all existing PCs with Windows 10 are capable of upgrading to Windows 11. The minimum specs of Windows 11 are:
- CPU Intel 8th Gen Coffee Lake o AMD Zen 2 e superiori;
- Supporto TPM 2.0 (Trusted Platform Module);
- 4GB of RAM;
- 64GB di storage.
These specifications they do not allow you to officially upgrade many PCs to Windows 11, even if these meet the prerequisites. This prompted users to look for alternative installation methods, to which we have also dedicated an ad hoc guide. As we have seen, Microsoft subsequently proceeded to publish a official method to install Windows 11 even on unsupported PCs.
Recall that, as happened for the transition to Windows 10, the upgrade to Windows 11 will not be free forever. It is likely that, after mid-2022, Microsoft could make the switch to Windows 11 paid. In this guide we explain how to upgrade your PC from Windows 10 to Windows 11.
How to upgrade your PC to Windows 11
- Check that your PC is officially supported through Microsoft's PC Health Check app by following these steps. This app, recently overhauled by Microsoft, allows you to find out if your device is fully compatible with Windows 11 or which components or settings are not right for the new operating system.
- Back up all your important documents, apps and data.
- Go in the Settings> Update and security> Windows Update of your PC with Windows 10.
- Check for updates.
- If the free Windows 11 update is available, you'll see an option to download and install, as seen on this screen.

- Click on download and install
- Follow the onscreen instructions and configure the Windows 11 settings
If the free Windows 11 update notice doesn't appear, but your PC is compatible with the new operating system, you just have to be patient and wait. Completed the update, you can finally try Windows 11. Microsoft's new operating system has been completely redesigned and packed with new features. Unfortunately, since it is an OS that has just been released, there are some bugs of various sizes: Microsoft has announced which ones will be the first to be solved.
