Competitive tournaments will come up PlayStation 5, Jim Ryan confirms. Speaking during CES 2022, where the PlayStation VR 2 and Horizon Call of the Mountain were announced, there was time to talk about the competitive side of consoles as well. During the presentation, in fact, Ryan discussed the new features that came via PS5 during its first year of life, such as 3D audio on TV speakers and SharePlay between PS5 and PS4.

Ryan then confirmed that in 2022 they are also planning to introduce a new feature for PS5 tournaments: originally announced in 2016 for PS4, PlayStation tournaments were a collaboration with esports organizer ESL. allowing users to participate in a competition format adapted for certain games, with a chance to win PlayStation prizes.

The feature has expanded over time to include a wide variety of games and competition formats, and while Ryan hasn't offered more information, it looks like some changes we'll see in action as early as 2022.

In July, Sony filed a patent for integrating online tournaments onto PS5, which would allow PlayStation Network to generate tournament slots rather than launch competitive features within a given game. This could mean that more titles will be able to take advantage of tournaments, especially competitive indie games that don't have such elaborate multiplayer features.

Tournaments on PlayStation 5 are scheduled for this year, so hopefully it won't be long for more details. Did you know that the new console covers have been unveiled?
