Splatoon 3 breaks all records with copies sold at launch in Japan

Splatoon 3, third-person shooter video game developed by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch, just broke the sales record at launch than any other game in Japan, on any platform. According to Nintendo data, the sequel is now regarded as the Switch's most successful launch, with 3,45 million physical and digital copies sold in the first 3 days of release. It even surpassed Switch's latest successful launch, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, by 600.000.

Pokémon Legends: Arceus took second place earlier this year, with 1,42 million copies sold at launch in Japan, while Pokémon: Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl sold 1,39 million last year. The Splatoon series has grown in popularity in Japan and Splatoon 2 came fifth in the ranking of the best-selling Switch games in the country until March 2022, as we reported in a previous article. With 4,03 million copies sold already at launch, it is very likely that Splatoon 3 will also climb the charts of total copies sold in Japan. Critic Matthew Castle reports in his review:

The most important change concerns the new three-color Turf War variant, a fantastic phase of the revamped Splatfest (where the community fights in the name of one of the three sides). This is a more goal-oriented version of the traditional Turf War, with the current leaders of the Splatfest keeping the two teams away from a signal that evokes support ink in the arena.
