In these days between the Nintendo Direct, the Ubisoft Forward and the State of Play we had lots of surprises in the gaming world, and obviously EA wanted to join the party. Yes, because today from The Sims Twitter account the news has come, the base version of The Sims 4 will become completely free from October 18th.
This surprising maneuver could catch players off guard who may have recently bought The Sims, but EA has decided to give the Desert Luxe Kit as a gift, which includes a set of new items for the home and for your character, to anyone who already had the game. The kit can be redeemed directly from the main menu, but it will only be recoverable until October 18st. 
Said this, it does not seem that the developers they intend to abandon to himself the project only because it became free, indeed, on the official site of The Sims 4 EA announced that:
With The Sims 4 shifting to free-to-play, our team has never been more motivated to develop meaningful new expansions for our players. [Game development will continue] for the foreseeable future.
The game will surely continue to hold its own 60 and passes paid expansions, but the opening to free to play is a big step for a historical saga like this.
